Itinerary
2026 itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Arusha
Meet your Thomson representative at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to Arusha.
Settle in for the evening before your safari begins.
Your safari adventure begins the moment you touch down in Tanzania, where you are warmly greeted by a Thomson Safaris representative before transferring into town to settle into The Arusha Hotel. Stroll through the manicured grounds, enjoy a drink on the terrace, or simply relax in your room away from the bustling city streets.
Days 2 to 3: Eastern Serengeti Nature Refuge
Fly to a Thomson-exclusive nature refuge in the Eastern Serengeti.
Explore on foot during the day and search for nocturnal wildlife on a night drive.
Listen to a Maasai storyteller share the legends and traditions of her people.
Operating outside the borders of the national park, the Eastern Serengeti Nature Refuge grants your group an unscripted style of exploration that simply isn't possible on standard safaris. Guided walking safaris with local Maasai naturalists let you step out into the open savanna on foot, decoding fresh tracks stamped into the soil and learning how indigenous plants support both wild animals and traditional medicine. Once night falls, head back out into the quiet darkness to scan for active nocturnal hunters, including bat-eared foxes, genets, and elusive aardvarks. Between wildlife outings, visits to a neighboring primary school and a women’s craft cooperative offer a genuine connection to modern Maasai community life.
This 10,000-acre private sanctuary is especially famous for supporting one of the highest concentrations of Maasai giraffes in Tanzania, and seeing them requires remarkably little effort. Camp life naturally revolves around a lively natural watering hole positioned directly in front of the main lounge deck. Here, you can unwind with a cold drink or morning coffee as steady streams of giraffes, zebras, baboons, and warthogs emerge from the surrounding woodland to drink and socialize, bringing dynamic animal interactions right to your seat.
Days 4 to 8: Big cats and migrating herds among granite kopjes
Head for the iconic Serengeti, where acacia trees and granite kopjes dot the seas of waving grass.
The Serengeti offers everyday opportunities to spot Tanzania’s most impressive wildlife—including big cats—and witness dramatic moments in the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebras.
Entering Serengeti National Park puts you right in the center of the action, where four unhurried days allow you to settle in as wildlife moves naturally around you. You might spend an afternoon watching mixed herds of zebra, giraffe, and impala filter through open clearings, listening to the sharp click of hooves on dry earth and watching the sudden warning tail-flicks that ripple through the group.
Your guide translates subtle signals like overhead vulture kettles or sudden alarm calls to reveal active wildlife nearby, leading you to lion prides resting in the shade of granite kopjes, elephant families navigating the woodlands, and dense pods of hippos grunting in muddy river bends. When the sun dips, return to a seasonal Nyumba camp—a private, low-impact canvas retreat deliberately relocated throughout the year to keep your group embedded directly within prime wildlife corridors, letting you fall asleep to the wild sounds of the night.
Days 9 to 10: Crater wildlife by day, Gibb’s Farm by night
Another short flight will take you to the Ngorongoro area. Just 10 miles wide, Ngorongoro Crater was formed from a collapsed volcano.
It’s now a self-sustaining ecosystem with the densest predator population in all of Africa. Explore the highlands by day with their lush, rolling hills and indulge at Gibb’s Farm by night. One of Travel + Leisure’s Best Safari Lodges in Africa, Gibb’s Farm is an 80-year-old working coffee estate offering farm-to-table dining, luxurious rooms with private verandas, and optional spa services.
Leave the open plains behind as you travel toward the dramatic Ngorongoro Highlands, watching the landscape shift from flat savanna to terraced green hillsides and dense acacia woodland.
Arrive near the crater rim in the late afternoon and check into your Nyumba camp, set high on the caldera edge where the mountain air turns cool and crisp. Take in the broad view looking down into the massive volcanic bowl below, then sit down to a warm, traditional Tanzanian dinner featuring regional specialties like ugali and slow-simmered stews. Afterward, turn in early—positioning you for a quick morning descent onto the crater floor well ahead of peak visitor traffic.
Days 11 to 12: Ancient baobabs above some of Africa’s largest elephant herds
Explore Tarangire National Park, where ancient baobab trees tower over some of the largest herds of elephants in all of Africa.
Keep a lookout for the hundreds of bird species Tarangire is known for—and dramatic interactions between predator and prey at the park’s watering holes.
Journey south into Tarangire National Park, a striking landscape characterized by red earth, sweeping marshes, and iconic, ancient baobab trees. The life-giving Tarangire River acts as a natural magnet for wildlife, drawing extraordinary numbers of animals—most notably some of the largest elephant herds found anywhere on the continent.
Spend two days exploring riverbanks and open woodlands where elephants splash in the riverbed, giraffes browse high in the acacias, and lions rest in the shade of sprawling baobabs. As sunset paints the sky in shades of gold and amber, return to camp to gather around the campfire and share stories beneath a brilliant blanket of stars.
Day 13: A farewell lunch in Arusha before flights home
Head to Arusha, where you’ll enjoy a farewell lunch at Arusha Coffee Lodge. Relax in a day room at Arusha Hotel before your flight home.
Enjoy a quiet final morning taking in the sights and sounds of the bush before making the scenic return drive to Arusha. Upon arrival in town, bid a fond farewell to your guides, who have shared their deep wisdom and passion for Tanzania throughout your journey.
Following your send-off, head over to the picturesque Arusha Coffee Lodge to enjoy a delicious lunch among the coffee trees. Afterward, settle into your comfortable day room at The Arusha Hotel to refresh, pack your belongings, and reflect on the memories of your trip before meeting your transfer driver for the final ride to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

In the afternoon, trade the dusty safari trails for the lush tranquility of Gibb’s Farm, a historic 1920s coffee estate nestled in the highlands. i just returned from a 13-day Safari and no words can describe the experience, emotions and feelings for Thomson Safaris and the wonderful treatment provided by all. From the arrival and pick up at the airport to the final drop off, the experience was top notch!! The food was amazing. As someone with Celiac disease, I was especially impressed. The team carefully accommodated my gluten-free needs throughout the trip. I never once got sick, which gave me tremendous peace of mind while traveling. The tents were great! Showers were hot! Camp staff was friendly and wonderful…especially Patrick, IDD, Rose and Hussein. The safari camps exceeded expectations. Our guides, Robert and Moudy, were knowledgeable, funny, and made the entire experience magical. They were the highlight of the entire safari, and we looked forward to each day’s wildlife viewing adventures because of them. For anyone looking for a Tanzania safari that combines expert guides, personalized service, incredible wildlife encounters, and outstanding accommodations, I highly recommend Thomson Safaris. You will not be disappointed!
