Itinerary
2026 itinerary
Day 1: Arusha, Tanzania
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your guide meets you for the transfer to your accommodations in Arusha.
Relax for the evening before flying into the Eastern Serengeti the next day.
Your Tanzanian adventure begins the moment you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport. A Thomson representative will be there to welcome you, help with your luggage, and get you settled for the short drive to Rivertrees Country Inn. Set on a historic coffee farm beside the Usa River, this peaceful retreat is the perfect place to slow down and settle into your surroundings after the journey.
Once you’ve checked in, spend the rest of the afternoon and evening enjoying the property. Rest well tonight, because tomorrow morning you’ll trade the coffee farm for the wide-open plains of the Serengeti.
Days 2 to 3: Eastern Serengeti Nature Refuge
Fly into the private Eastern Serengeti Nature Refuge and begin your safari amid 10,000 acres of open wilderness.
Follow a local scout among giraffes and plains wildlife, watch animals gather at the camp waterhole, and venture out after sunset to discover what emerges at night.
Meet members of the Enjipai Women’s Group and hear traditional Maasai stories rooted in this landscape.
The Eastern Serengeti Nature Refuge is a 10,000-acre private wilderness where wildlife moves freely beyond the boundaries of Tanzania’s national parks. After a short bush flight from Arusha, settle into camp and watch the waterhole become a gathering place for animals throughout the day. When you’re ready to explore, head out with Maasai scouts and leave the vehicle behind. They’ll teach you how to read tracks and signs in the landscape, turning an ordinary walk into a lesson in the hidden world of the bush. Once the sun goes down, the refuge reveals another cast of wildlife, and a spotlight-lit night drive offers the chance to find aardvarks, genets, and hunting owls.
The people of the surrounding communities are just as much a part of the experience. Meet members of the Enjipai Women’s Group at their local market and learn about the work they do within their community. Later, spend an evening around the fire with Maasai elders, listening to stories and traditions that offer a window into generations of life on this land.
Days 4 to 6: Serengeti National Park
Roam grasslands punctuated by granite kopjes and acacia trees, watching for lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, wildebeest, and zebra.
Witness abundant wildlife as your guide follows fresh activity across the plains, plus potential opportunities to encounter the Great Migration.
Gain an aerial perspective with an optional sunrise hot air balloon flight (additional fee) over the Serengeti, followed by breakfast.
Three days in the Serengeti give you time to experience the park beyond its famous postcard views. Follow winding tracks through the grasslands and acacia-dotted plains, stopping to watch whatever unfolds around you. You might find a lion stretched beneath a tree, elephants moving steadily across the savanna, hippos gathered in a river, giraffes reaching into the treetops, or thousands of wildebeest and zebra filling the horizon. With an expert driver-guide behind the wheel, there’s no need to hurry. Stay with a sighting, follow fresh tracks, or simply find a quiet place to take in the scale of the Serengeti.
For a memorable holiday morning, take to the sky on an optional hot-air balloon flight, floating above the plains as the sun rises. Touch down for a champagne breakfast in the bush before continuing your day on the ground. Each evening, return to your seasonal Nyumba camp for a warm dinner, a peaceful night beneath the stars, and the unmistakable sounds of the Serengeti after dark.
Days 7 to 8: Ngorongoro Crater & Highlands
Fly to the Ngorongoro Highlands, where green slopes rise above the immense volcanic walls of Ngorongoro Crater.
Descend to the crater floor to explore grasslands, wetlands, and forests as you search for lions, elephants, hippos, buffalo, and rare black rhinos.
Savor time at historic Gibb’s Farm, an award-winning coffee estate known for its gardens, farm-to-table meals, and peaceful highland setting.
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Tanzania’s most remarkable wildlife destinations. Formed when a massive volcano collapsed millions of years ago, the caldera stretches roughly 10 miles across and creates a natural enclosure for an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. Descend onto the crater floor, where grasslands surround freshwater marshes and acacia woodlands, creating habitat for everything from hippos and flamingos to elephants, wildebeest, zebra, and the endangered black rhino. With no need to cover vast distances, you can spend the morning watching wildlife unfold around you, from herds grazing across the plains to lions resting near the marshes.
After your time in the crater, head to Gibb’s Farm for two nights on the slopes of the Ngorongoro Highlands. Established as a coffee farm in the 1920s, the historic property is still surrounded by working farmland and lush gardens. Wander through the ten acres of organic gardens, learn more about the farm’s coffee production, or simply settle into your private garden cottage. Meals are prepared using ingredients grown on the property and nearby farms, making Gibb’s a distinctly local way to slow down and enjoy the quieter side of northern Tanzania.
Day 9: Arusha, Tanzania
Return to Arusha for a farewell lunch before your international departure.
Relax in a day room before transferring to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home.
After days of sharing the road, watching wildlife, swapping stories, and celebrating the holidays together, it’s time to say goodbye to the guide team who have become an important part of your journey. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at Arusha Coffee Lodge, surrounded by the estate’s leafy coffee trees, then head to your private day room at Rivertrees Country Inn. As you make your way home, you’ll leave Tanzania with more than memories of the places you visited, but of the people who helped make the journey special.
