Itinerary
Itinerary 1 itinerary
Day 1: Arusha, Tanzania
Meet your Thomson representative at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your accommodations in Arusha.
Settle in for the night before flying to the Eastern Serengeti the next day.
Touching down in Tanzania, your Thomson representative greets you at the airport for the comfortable transfer to Mount Meru Hotel, nestled quietly in the leafy outskirts of Arusha.
Spend the afternoon unwinding after your long flight within the hotel's lush, manicured grounds. Take a quiet drink on the terrace overlooking Mount Meru, dip into the pool, or simply enjoy a restful afternoon in your room away from the main city traffic. A peaceful evening here ensures you awake fully refreshed for your morning flight into the Serengeti wild.
Days 2 to 3: Eastern Serengeti Nature Refuge
Fly to the private 10,000-acre Eastern Serengeti Nature Refuge, where activities extend beyond traditional wildlife drives.
Walk among giraffes, zebras and other wildlife, then head out after dark in search of nocturnal species.
Hear stories from a Maasai storyteller and learn more about life in this landscape.
A short scenic flight carries you into a private, Thomson-exclusive, 10,000-acre wilderness refuge in the Eastern Serengeti, where conservation efforts have helped indigenous wildlife flourish. Because the refuge lies outside national park boundaries, your experience extends beyond traditional wildlife drives. Step into the open savanna on foot with expert Maasai trackers, learning to read subtle signs in the soil as giraffes, zebras, and gazelles move across the landscape.
When darkness settles over the bush, set out on a spotlit night drive to search for elusive nocturnal wildlife, from bush babies and servals to genets on the prowl. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit a local school and meet members of the surrounding community, gaining insight into daily life beyond the safari. Back at camp, gather around the fire to hear traditional stories from Maasai elders and learn more about their deep-rooted connection to this ancient landscape.
Days 4 to 5: Serengeti National Park
Explore seas of grass punctuated by acacia trees and granite kopjes.
Search for lions, cheetahs, leopards and elephants alongside herds of wildebeest and zebra.
Explore the central Serengeti, where the landscape is constantly changing and every outing brings a new mix of wildlife. Giraffes move through the open grasslands, hippos gather in the waterways, and warthogs, jackals, and bat-eared foxes can appear along the way. Keep your eyes on the skies, too, for bee-eaters, secretary birds, and raptors soaring overhead. And with Thomson’s lion guarantee, you can count on seeing one of the Serengeti’s most iconic predators during your stay.
Days 6 to 7: Ngorongoro Crater
Stay on the crater rim for an early descent to the wildlife-rich floor before most visitors arrive.
Search the caldera’s grasslands, wetlands and forests for lions, elephants, hippos, buffalo and rare black rhinos.
Explore within the walls of this 10-mile-wide collapsed volcano, home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife.
Ascend into the cool, mist-shrouded Ngorongoro Highlands to settle in along the high crater rim. Positioned directly on the edge, you’ll enjoy a privileged early descent down the 2,000-foot volcanic walls at dawn, reaching the crater floor as the first golden rays illuminate the morning mist before other visitors arrive.
Spanning 100 square miles, this self-contained caldera harbors an astounding 25,000 animals, making it one of the rare places on the continent to encounter all of the Big Five in a single day. Spend the morning exploring fever-tree forests, marshy edges, and open plains: watch thousands of lesser flamingos tinting the shallow waters of Lake Magadi a brilliant pink, observe golden jackals trotting through the high grasses, and spot serval cats hunting along the reed beds while grey crowned cranes display on the open turf.
Day 8: Arusha, Tanzania
Return to Arusha for lunch at Arusha Coffee Lodge.
Relax in a day room before transferring to the airport for your flight home.
Awaken to a final morning in the highlands, enjoying a warm cup of coffee on the porch of your Nyumba tent as the crisp air gives way to dawn. After bidding a fond farewell to your camp staff and guides who have shared their passion for Tanzania with you, board your flight back to Arusha.
Upon arrival, gather for a delicious celebratory lunch among the manicured coffee trees at the historic Arusha Coffee Lodge. Afterward, settle into a comfortable day room to refresh, pack your belongings, and reflect on the extraordinary sights and sounds of your journey before your driver transfers you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home.

I have been trying to figure how to put my gratitude into words. Here it goes. On June 5, I boarded plane from San Francisco California to Africa. I had a duffle bag crammed full of clothing and toiletries and a backpack heavy with too much camera gear. I had no idea what I would find in Africa. I hoped for a glimpse of a lion and maybe a rumor of cheetah or see a few zebras on the horizon. What I got was something so much more. And what I learned will stay with me forever. I learned there is nothing like listening to wildebeests and zebras having a late-night snack right outside your tent. I learned watching a cheetah and her two cubs feeding on a wildebeest can bring tears to your eyes. I learned that hearing the rumbling breath of a lioness as she sidles up to your vehicle will take your breath away. I learned that Maasai bomas are humbling, but the people welcoming and the children’s smiles unforgettable. I learned the Serengeti can be hot and dusty, and the roads a little bumpy, but I wouldn’t trade those rides for anything. I learned to never underestimate what seeing the sunrise over the Serengeti and the sunset over the Ngorongoro Crater can do to you. I learned in Stone Town it’s not about our past mistakes but how we learn from them that makes us a better generation. And that the best way to end your day, is with more food and stories than you could ever consume. But most importantly I learned there is truth behind the saying, ‘Life is not about the breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away.’ I realized that life is too short to waste time on moments that don’t take my breath away. Because those moments and the people who are in them are far more valuable than you realize. On June 18, my plane touched down in San Francisco, California. I stepped off that plane with a few life lessons and lifetime of moments that took my breath away. And for that I can never thank you enough.
