Serengeti National Park

Welcome to the Serengeti

Endless Horizons

“Epic” barely begins to describe the Serengeti’s grasslands that stretch beyond the eyes and its acacia-covered plains where lions roam. The name comes from a Maasai word that means “the place where the land runs on forever,” and it’s easy to see why: these 5,700 square miles of ancient wilderness never run out of horizon.

The Great Migration

Wild and Diverse

The Serengeti, Tanzania’s top safari destination, is renowned for the Great Migration, during which two million wildebeest and zebra journey annually. The migration changes with the seasons: January to March is calving season; April to June is the Rut, a mass breeding event; and in July–October, wildebeest cross the Mara River.

Africa’s Big Five—buffalo, lion, leopard, rhino and elephant—can be seen here. The park houses over 3,000 lions, with leopards in acacia trees and lions on rocky kopjes. The Serengeti is also home to giraffe, zebra, hyena, cheetah, baboon, hippo and 500 bird species like ostrich and tawny eagle.

Beyond its wildlife, the Serengeti offers stunning sunsets and starry nights, leaving you with unforgettable memories.

Four Distinct Regions

Rich with Life

The Southern Plains

Open, grassy plains that the Serengeti is famous for.

The Central Seronera Valley

A network of river valleys with rich grazing lands that attract the highest density of wildlife.

The Western Corridor

From Lake Victoria in the west, the Western Corridor follows the Grumeti River, the site of the Great Migration’s first perilous river crossing.

The Northern Serengeti

These remote wilds contain the crocodile-infested waters of the Mara River, a legendary site for exciting Great Migration river crossings.

“The ‘tents’ were better appointed than most hotels, warm, safe, romantic, yet left a light footprint on the land and felt authentic and culturally in sync.”
